Visualization Style Guide Governance
PRISM
A framework for understanding visualization style guides as organizational artifacts.
PRISM examines style guides not only as collections of design rules, but as organizational artifacts that encode purpose, mechanisms of control, institutional responsibility, and situated flexibility.
About the project
Public style guides make visualization guidance visible, but they rarely explain the organizational work behind them: why guidance exists, who maintains it, how it is operationalized, and when rules become flexible. PRISM compares public style guide documents with interview accounts of how visualization guidance operates in practice.
The companion Guideline Explorer provides rule-level access to individual visualization guidelines extracted from the corpus.
